Does God Still Speak? (12.6.08)

On last week's radio broadcast, we asked the question, “Does God still speak?” Does God still speak today in the same way that He did in the Scriptures? We believe that He does not. We do believe, however, that He does speak. God speaks to us today by the Holy Spirit through the Scriptures. He no longer speaks to us as He did in the past – through dreams, visions, voices, and impressions – but He does still speak. According to Hebrews 1:2, “in these last days he has spoken to us by His Son.” And while Jesus is no longer physically with us, His presence still speaks to us through the Scriptures. According to the testimony of the Apostle Peter, “We were eyewitnesses of his majesty.” And “we told you about the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ” (I Peter 1:16). Jesus continues to reveal God to us through the written testimony of the Scriptures. Therefore the Scriptures are the only authoritative source (“Sola Scriptura”) for Christian life (II Tim. 3:16-17). In the Scriptures we have a singular source of authority and a sufficient source of authority, sufficient for salvation and godly living. God speaks to us (in other words, reveals Himself to us) only through the Scriptures. While we do not believe God speaks to us today apart from the Scriptures, we do believe that God guides us. The Holy Spirit may use any number of means (circumstances, people, etc.) to silently, providentially guide us. However, we would not call this God speaking but God guiding. God speaks through the Scriptures and through the Scriptures alone.
