Christ and Your Exercise Habits (10/28/08)

When I was in high school I ran competitively. I ran six days a week, sometimes up to 40 miles a week. Now I only run four miles three times a week, just to stay healthy and in decent shape. My high school coach, on the other hand, was addicted to running, literally. He really did nothing but run. As an example, every year he ran a 50 mile race. Fifty miles in a single, continuous event. Do you think God cares about our exercise habits? I think so. Jesus doesn’t operate in a separate corner of your life. He isn’t just one of many things going on in your life. Jesus is in the center of your life, transforming every area of life. The Scriptures speak against sloth, apathy, and laziness. Proverbs 15:19 says, “The way of the sluggard is blocked with thorns.” Life is better, smoother, when you are active. It is pleasing to God to take care of yourself. He gave you a physical body and you are responsible to take care of it. But human nature tends toward extremes. If you don’t tend toward the extreme of sloth, maybe you tend toward the extreme of my coach. You want to be healthy and strong, but you’re paying attention to only a part of you, ignoring entire dimensions of your life. We want to be healthy and whole people, but we ignore the spiritual and moral dimensions of health and wholeness. Are you a sloth? Or are you an addict?

what if...

what if you're neither. what if you're in the middle. What if you don't work out, but you're constantly busy?

Get that heart going

If you're neither a sloth nor an addict, that's a good thing. But just being busy is not enough to stay in shape. My wife is the expert, not me, but I do know that you need to get that heart going. You need some cardiovascular exercise. But as a pastor, all I can say is that you need to take care of yourself. How you do that is up to you.
