Christ and Your Eating Habits (10/21/08)
In his sermon this Sunday, Pastor Don told the story of an overweight preacher railing against excesses – for instance, smoking and drinking. A woman came up to him after the sermon and said, “How can we take you seriously when you look like you do?” In this series of blogs, I’ve been writing about Christ and Culture, how Jesus relates to our culture. Jesus wants to transform our culture, and sometimes to transform it, He first has to undo it. The woman in Pastor Don’s story pointed out an inconsistency in our culture, even our Christian culture. We seem to ignore the excesses in our eating habits. We are gluttons. Gluttony is the over-indulgence in and over-consumption of food and drink. Proverbs 25:16 warns us, “If you find honey, eat just enough—too much of it, and you will vomit.” I don’t think that enjoying a treat is a sin, but gluttony is a different story. But we’re comfortable in our gluttony. Gluttony is an acceptable, and often joked-about, sin. And I, with my high metabolism, can get away with it. Maybe you can’t. But is gluttony okay if it doesn’t hang over my belt?
