Christ and the Election (11.04.08)

I voted today. And though Bloomfield as a church chooses not to associate itself with a particular party nor to endorse any particular candidate, I have no problem telling you who I voted for. I voted for John McCain. Not because I really believe in him, but because I couldn’t stomach the alternative. By the time you are reading this, election results are in and we have our next president. And I’m not too worried about who it is. Because John McCain is not the messiah and he cannot solve our problems as a nation. And Barak Obama is not the antichrist (at least I don’t think so) and he alone cannot bring an end to American greatness. I’m not too worried about who our next president is, but I do care. And I think God cares. Romans 13:1 tells us that “those in positions of authority have been placed there by God.” And that leads me to a interesting place. God is in control over who is elected as President of the United States, not just passively, but actively. God intentionally and willfully, through human instruments, places our presidents in power, even the bad ones. But... for whom would Jesus have voted? I have a hard time believing that Jesus would have voted for a man who supports abortion and homosexual marriage. I’m not sure he would have voted for John McCain either. Would He have voted third party? Would He have abstained? These are rather pointless questions, because the possibility of Jesus voting is not real. But I think Jesus would have some guidance for His followers in our voting. And would He have had us vote for someone other than the one God, in His sovereignty, placed into power?
