Christ and Barak Obama (11.11.08)
It is a historic day in America. The first African American has been elected President of the United States. And for that, I am glad. I just wish it were not Barak Obama. I believe his presidency will not be good for America. Not because he’s black, not because he’s a Democrat, and not because he’s incredibly liberal. But because he stands in opposition to much of God’s truth. Some people I’ve spoken with believe that Obama’s presidency marks the beginning of the end of America. That by the end of his presidency, our freedoms will be gone, marriage will be redefined, and Roe v. Wade will win the day. But I don’t know that I believe that. His presidency will not be good for America, but, at the same time, it could be God’s instrument to revive and reform the church. Barak Obama cannot singlehandedly destroy America. If that were to happen, it would be the fault of all of us, particularly the fault of the people of God. Followers of Christ are called to be salt and light. Salt preserves. Light guides. Followers of Christ, from the beginning of this nation, have been central to its success and prosperity. And we can be that still. So trust the sovereignty of God. Barak Obama cannot subvert or alter the plans of God. God put Obama in power and God can remove him from power. Then speak words of judgment. Tell it straight. That right is right and wrong is wrong. And that if someone is on the wrong side of God’s truth, there will be Hell to pay. Speak words of judgment, graciously, gently, and out of love, to people you know, to our President and other government officials. God will hold them accountable. As the prophet Isaiah put it: “He judges the great people of the world and brings them all to nothing.” And respect President-Elect Obama as the President of the United States. “Those in places of authority have been placed there by God. Give respect and honor to those who are in authority” (Rom. 13:1,7). God placed Barak Obama in power. I can’t wait to see why.
