Christ and Absolute Truth (2.3.09)
Truth is a person. In this series of blogs, Christ and Culture, I’ve been sharing how I think Jesus confronts and transforms human culture, particularly our American culture. Our culture is increasingly relativistic and pluralistic. People believe that true, that right and wrong, depends on the person. People think that contradictory truths can both be true at the same time. For instance, people think, “What’s right for you may not be right for me.” Or, “Muslims, Christians… we all worship the same God.” Our culture is relativistic and pluralistic. But I believe that Jesus Christ is absolute and singular. There is such a thing as absolute truth and absolute right and wrong. Truth is rooted in God’s character. Truth, while it contains facts and statements, is ultimately a person. If you believe in a God, the ultimate absolute, it only makes sense to believe in absolute truth. Therefore, we can know, at least partially, absolute truth, absolute right and wrong. But how? Who’s to say what’s absolutely right and wrong? Society? What if a society says that killing Jews is right? Just because something is done in a society doesn’t mean it ought to be done. Society doesn’t determine what’s right and wrong. What about me, then? What happens when my right invades your space and I slap you on the face? What happens when I say it’s right for me to rape and kill? The individual doesn’t determine truth. Only God determines what is true. Only God determines what is right and wrong. “I, the LORD, speak the truth; I declare what is right” (Isaiah 45:19). God has spoken truth; He has declared what is right. God has revealed Himself, so that we can know, in part, what is true and right. Therefore, we must live well, and communicate graciously, absolute truth. Truth is not primarily a set of facts. Right and wrong is not primarily a standard of behavior to which we have to make everyone adhere. Truth is a person. Right and wrong is His character. Don’t live by a set of rules, live in submission to Jesus, in keeping with His character. Don’t march in a protest, yelling and screaming, “Homosexuality is sin!” Share the person of Jesus.
